London Girl single, 9th March
The Invisible album, 2nd March
“a zingy, urgent and warmly soulful, genre-hopping delight
that recalls a more minimal TV On The Radio” Time Out
With their eponymous debut album The Invisible have woven together strands of diverse sounds to create a fresh and new musical elixir. Their music is a unique strain of danceable, multi-layered genre-spanning spacepop imbued with ethereal yet gutsy vocals- something alien but simultaneously completely familiar.
In recent weeks the Londoners have been turning up the heat with increasingly wonderful live shows, described in one instance as sounding "like Fugazi borrowed John Spencer's backline and got Terry Callier on board for a tribute to Band Of Gypsies". Both Hot Chip and Foals have personally approached the band with offers to join them on live dates and previous single Monster's Waltz has led to praise from XFM's prophet of great music John Kennedy, as well as Zane Lowe declaring the track "Hottest Record In The World".
All this, combined with an ongoing string of gigs, new single London Girl and their magical forthcoming album, suggest a bright future is increasingly visible for The Invisible.
Towards the end of 2006, Tom, Leo and Dave, three friends with impeccable musical pedigrees, (including Roisin Murphy, XX Teens, Amy Winehouse, Paul Epworth, Polar Bear and Bugz In The Attic), embarked on what was originally intended as a solo project for Dave. A beautiful album gradually emerged and,via the process of its creation, The Invisible was born.
London Girl and the band's eponymous debut LP are ambitious and skillfully crafted slices of sumptuous music, wide-ranging in their diverse influences and uncompromising in vision. Theirs is a world where Prince, King Sunny Ade, Sonic Youth, Queens Of The Stone Age, Shuggie Otis and Radiohead are immersed in fruitful creative dialogue. Classical, medieval church music and more digitized dance sounds all simmer beneath the surface too.
Through their combined magical musicianship and songwriting, The Invisible meld these disparate soundsto forge something special, fresh and altogether new.
Production on the album is handled by Matthew Herbert. The Invisible are the first group that the celebrated electronic pioneer has been inspired to work with in this way. Herbert's influence can be heard in the balancing of electronic elements with more natural, organic sounds, matching his studio expertise with the band's live sound. Another vital element within the creative dynamic is the presence of phenomenal UK-based singer Eska, whose contribution adds significantly to the mood and texture of the music.
The Invisible's London Girl single and self-titled album will both be released on Matthew Herbert's acclaimed Accidental Records label. London Girl will come with new mixes by fellow-Londoners Hot Chip and cutting-edge techno innovator Cristian Vogel. The Invisible play the live dates listed below and further performances and releases are planned for 2009.
