After the resounding success of Convergence 2016 - attended by 25,000 people, spanning 8 iconic London venues and featuring over 50 live performances, talks and workshops, Convergence - the UK’s most restless Music + Art + Technology series returns in 2017 for its fourth edition.

Convergence takes place from 21- 25 March 2017 in venues across London including Barbican, Electric Brixton, Village Underground, Scala, XOYO and Behind The Bike Shed.

Convergence 2017 kicks off with an eclectic opening night of three shows. Celebrated Seattle drone metal band and masters of extreme dissonance Sunn O))), bring their arrhythmic blend of metal, drone, ambient, noise and minimalistic music to the Barbican Centre. Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir who has collaborated with bands such as Pan Sonic, Throbbing Gristle and Múm will present modern classical pieces for voice and cello. Meanwhile at Village Underground, Erased Tapes stalwart Rival Consoles explores a darker space with his arresting compositions for the Opening Party and South London newcomers Formation celebrate their debut album release “Look At The Powerful People” with their biggest headline show to date at XOYO. Expect cowbells, crowd surfing and politically charged post-punk grooves.

Wednesday 22nd March finds Convergence back at the Barbican, for a night with influential German innovator and composer Manuel Göttsching (Ash Ra Tempel, later Ashra) with two of his projects in an exciting double-bill. The Ash Ra Tempel Experience featuring the stellar line-up of Ariel Pink, Shags Chamberlain, Oren Ambarchi and Manuel Göttsching, performing original titles from the Ash Ra Tempel albums, Schwingungen and Seven Up (both from 1972). Manuel also performs his seminal,  electronic music landmark album, ''E2-E4'' in its entirety in a rare solo performance. The album gained a great deal of attention at the end of the 80s in the house, techno and dance-floor scenes and was remixed, name-checked and sampled by dozens of bands and DJs and remains as influential today, 35 years later. Toronto dark synth pop star, Austra sends out a call for radical hope with compelling, disciplined anthems from her third and most formidable album to date “Future Politics” over at Village Underground. Over at Koko, Daniel Lanois headlines a top-notch line up of America’s most inventive musicians. The veteran sound architect will perform a solo instrumental set of songs from his critically acclaimed new album “Goodbye to Language”. Vast and grand-sounding atmospheres will be created from intermingling pedal and lap steel guitars.  He will be joined by LA beat scene producer Nosaj Thing and the art rock composer and former Battles frontman, Tyondai Braxton who brings together electronic and modern orchestral elements in his thrilling new solo show. Using sophisticated rhythmic structures from North and West African folk traditions, Brooklyn-based acoustic ensemble, Dawn of Midi open the evening with their sonic tapestry of trance-inducing grooves.

Thursday 23rd March sees Tom Jenkinson, aka Squarepusher in his current form as Shobaleader One, present a catalogue featuring thrilling classics from albums like “Hard Normal Daddy” and “Music Is Rotted One Note”, whilst Flamingods promise an unmissable opening explosion of Eastern and African sounds filtered through a psychedelic prism. Ninja Tune’s original cut ‘n’ paste mavericks, Coldcut return to the stage with their unstoppable energy and hip-hop infused club jams, they will be joined by Hyperdub head honcho Kode 9 as special guest and supported by San Diego’s toaster-mystic, Gonjasufi, delivering his singular hazy global-synthesis to Convergence with a blisteringly intense performance. At the Scala, Convergence joins forces with festival promoters Continental Drifts, to present an exhilarating bill in the determined spirit of the Arab Spring with 47SOUL and Cairo Liberation Front leading the way in producing new sounds drawing on diverse Arabic influences.

The bill for Friday 24th March includes Actress’ avant-electronica, industrial live set which promises to be a genre-bending journey through dystopianism, whilst North London producer Randomer stitches together modern bass with classic techno and less esoteric 4/4 rhythms. Lauded for their vast, sculptural live audio-visual shows, Raime show their dexterity by way of fiercely uptempo, minimal, meticulously crafted electro-acoustic rhythm tracks. Fans will be treated to the duo's explorations into the DNA of dub-techno, garage/grime and post-hardcore rock music spliced into sleek and predatory new forms.

Convergence goes out with a bang on Saturday 25th March with a curated Closing Party headlined by the inventive shape-shifting producer, Jacques Greene who has breathed new life into house with fresh collaborations and inspired original releases and remixes. Jacques Greene will be inviting friends and contemporaries to celebrate his influences from house and techno to hip-hop, RnB and electro.

Convergence Sessions 2017

Convergence is delighted to present an expanded programme for Sessions in 2017. The series of talks, workshops, screenings, networking events and live music will take place over two twelve-hour days in its new home, Behind The Bike Shed on Old Street in Shoreditch.

Convergence Sessions’ first line-up announcement includes Native Instruments, Marshmallow Laser Feast, onedotzero, Carroll/Fletcher, Elektra, Punchdrunk, British Council, Another Space, Circa69, and Mixcloud. Special programmes will be guest-curated by Native Instruments and onedotzero.

Friday 24th March will be industry-focused, with an emphasis on international creativity and unique industry insights. In partnership with the British Council, Convergence will bring together international leaders in music, art and technology to discuss the future of the industry, its global potential, and the challenges we face in sustaining impactful creation. Alongside these discussions will be a series of intimate industry insights, delivered by cutting-edge digital creatives and musicians from the UK and abroad.

Saturday 25th March will take an in-depth look at big ideas and new discoveries in music, art and technology, from the future of immersive experiences to creative applications of Artificial Intelligence. The afternoon will host a special guest-curated session from onedotzero, focused on artists who use machine learning, robotics, wearable computing and prosthetics to design performative systems and interactive experiences. The weekend closes with an evening hosted by Native Instruments, featuring live music, talks, and workshops exploring intelligent sound design and the boundaries of music and technology.

Visual Arts

Convergence is proud to have developed a new relationship with Carroll/Fletcher, a leading platform for contemporary art with an emphasis on socio-political work using new technologies. Together Convergence and Carroll/Fletcher will commission new work to be installed in the iconic Great Eastern Wall Gallery. The Great Eastern Wall Gallery is passed by over 10 million visitors a year, making it one of London’s most viewed exhibition spaces.

On Convergence, Artistic Director, Glenn Max says:

To the casual participant, music and arts-culture has been built on big headlines that captured a defining cultural moment that could be shared across international cities and, in some cases, across continents. But a steady undercurrent has always thrived representing a rich proliferation of ideas often in total disregard of the mainstream.

In recent years, with the atomisation of the music industry combined with the exponential growth of accessible digital information, the mainstream has lost its power as a cohesive arbiter of widespread culture. The internet's democratisation of ideas has opened offering a broader array and a more personal engagement with the underground. Today what was once fringe is now easily accessed and increasingly palatable in the diet of the arts consumer.

Amongst our line-up one can find top-tier innovators who have worked determinedly in their specialist areas but whose work deserves wider appreciation. Convergence celebrates this 'Triumph of the Niche' and we invite you to share and experience the digital as physical in shared spaces across London.
